Radio Theory Flashcards
What are the 5 bands of frequencies that we use in aviation?
- Low (LF)
- Medium (MF)
- High (HF)
- Very High (VHF)
- Ultra High (UHF)
Where are you most likely to see High Frequency (HF) radio?
Far north or Trans-Atlantic
What is High Frequency (HF)?
- 3000 - 30000 KHZ
- Use for long range air and ground comms
- Its range is dependant on conditions in the ionosphere (Sun up, Frequency up. Sun down, Frequency down). During the day you will use 5000Khz and above. At night, you’ll use around 3000Khz.
In Northern Canada where VHF cannot be established, what specific frequency will you use?
5680Khz
What is VHF?
- 30 - 300 Mhz
- Very High Frequency
- Used extensively in aviation navigation aids and comms
What VHF channel ranges do we use for VOR and voice comms?
- VOR: 112.00 - 117.95 Mhz
- Voice: 118.00 - 137.00 Mhz
LM, MF, HF are all in _hz
Khz
VHF and UHF are in _hz
Mhz (Mega)
What is the ILS (Instrument Landing System) radio range?
108.10 - 111.95
What are the radio channel ranges for ILS, VOR, and Voice comms?
ILS: 108.10 - 111.95
VOR: 112.00 - 117.95
Voice: 118.00 - 137.00
What phenomenon is the reason VHF and UHF frequencies have very few ground waves?
Attenuation (objects in the way)
What frequency range is UHF in?
300 - 3000 Mhz
Mostly used by the military and gov, but DMEs are also in this range.
What are ground waves?
What are sky waves?
