What is a Public Service Broadcaster?
A media organisation that is seen to offer a public service by catering for a range of tastes and audiences. The main PSBs in the UK: BBC, ITV, Channel 4/5, etc.
What is a Profile?
How they are defined to their target audience through their brand identity, e.g presenters/programme style. This includes their aims and ethos.
What is Cross-platform marketing?
Where one form is advertised on another media platform e.g BBC1 broadcasting adverts for its radio stations and vice-versa.
What is a Syndicated Output?
When radio stations make and sell a programme to other stations, or buy a programme that may be available to other radio stations.
What is Stripping?
Where a certain programme is broadcast at the same time everyday, which attracts an audience who associate a particular programme with their daily routine.
What is Audio Streaming?
Where listeners can click on a link to play the radio programme instantly, increasing global reach.
What is ‘Window on the World’?
The idea that media texts, especially those that show aspects of reality, show the audience the ‘real’ world as it happens.
What is Plurality?
A range of content to suit many people.
What is a Niche Audience?
A small audience with specialised interests, tastes and backgrounds.
What is an Interactive Audience?
The ways in which audiences can become actively involved with a product e.g commenting on a post or live tweeting.
What is an Independent Local Radio?
Regional commercial stations that are specific to a certain area of the country, not part of a network group.
What is a National Brand?
Regional stations collected into networks, sharing some programmes and syndicated output, such as global radio, Bauer media group, Guardian media group etc.
What is Community Radio?
Stations that serve their local areas and produce content of interest to local people, often non-profit and funded by the local community. Many presenters have started out here.
What is Hospital Radio?
Stations based in hospitals and staff by volunteers, broadcasting in the UK. Many presenters have started out here.
