Newspaper Terminology Flashcards
What is a Centre Spread?
A photograph, often in full colour, that runs across the middle two pages.
What is a Lead Story?
Main story, usually a splash.
What is a Gutter?
The blank space between margins of facing pages of a publication, or the blank space between columns of text.
What is a Folio?
Top label for the whole page - can relate to the area covered in paper e.g national, social media, Syria (or big news topic).
What is Page Furniture?
Everything on the page, except pictures or text of stories.
What is a Standalone?
Picture story that can exist on its own or on a front page, leading to a story inside.
What is Body Text/Copy?
Also known as copy - written material that makes up the main part of an article.
What is a Byline?
The line above the story, giving the author’s name and sometimes their job and location.
What is a Stand First?
Block of text that introduces the story, normally in different style to body text/headline.
What is an Edition?
Some newspapers print several of these: versions with some changes, and maybe additional late stories.
What is a Skyline?
An information panel on the front page, telling the reader about other stories in the paper to tempt them inside.
What is a Classified Ad?
An advertisement that uses only text, as opposed to a display ad, which also incorporates graphics.
What is a Pull Quote?
Something taken from within an article, usually said by the person in the main image.
What is a Target Audience?
People who the newspaper aim to sell to.
What is a Main Image?
Dominant picture, often filling much of the cover.
What is a Headline?
A phrase that summarises the main point of the article - usually in large print and a different style to catch the attention of the reader.
What is a Caption?
Brief text underneath an image describing the photo or graphic.
What is a Barcode?
Used to scan newspaper when purchasing: optical, machine-readable representation of data, shows price.
What is a Masthead?
Title of the newspaper displayed on the front page.
What is a Puff Box?
A newspaper’s own advertisements at the top of the front page, promoting articles inside or future issues.
