Radio Failure Flashcards
Radio failure procedures shall be adopted when:
- An a/c has selected 7600 & the pilot does not respond to ATC
- Comms cannot be maintained with an a/c on any flight which is being provided with an ATC or advisory service
- Comms cannot be established with an a/c operating, or intending to operate, on an IFR flight plan within controlled or advisory airspace.
After attempts to establish two-way comms have failed, ATCOs are to carry out the following standard radio failure procedures:
- Maintain separation between radio fail a/c & other known traffic.
- Give pertinent info about the movements of radio fail a/c to other traffic.
- Ask a/c in the vicinity to establish comms with the radio fail a/c & relay messages.
- Use all means possible to monitor the a/c progress.
- Attempt to relay info using ACARS/datalink.
- Transmit on appropriate frequencies:
- a. Level, route and EAT or ETA to which the radio fail a/c is assumed to be adhering
- b. WX conditions at destination aerodrome, suitable alternate & in areas suitable for a descent through cloud. - When, in consultation with operator, instructions to divert have been transmitted to the radio fail a/c, inform alternate aerodrome & request they try to establish comms.
- Commence overdue action if necessary.
