What is radio 1’s service license?
The remit of radio 1 is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. It’s target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should provide some programming for younger teenagers.
It should offer a range of new music, support emerging artists- especially those from the uk and provide a platform for live music. News, documentaries and advice campaigns should cover areas of relevance to young adults
What is the political context of radio?
There have been political debates about whether radio 1 should be seen as a PSB broadcasting, with free market supporting politicians calling for it to be sold to the commercial sector and be funded by advertising
They argue that it isn’t sufficiently different to commercial pop music radio, with which it competes unfairly so shouldn’t be publicly funded
How has bbc radio 1 addressed these claims?
Making radio 1 more appealing to younger listeners- which fitted their requirement to cater for all audiences and reflect the diversity of the count across their stable of stations.
Radio 1’s daytime programmes do offer a mix of music, information and entertainment and use an extensive playlist to introduce unfamiliar and innovative songs alongside more established tracks.
The current head of music has been trying to get away from the data driven approach in choosing what will get played, in order to make the playlist less globally homogenous and more distinctive.

Regular slots offering advice to young people such as exam stress
