what is radiculopathy?
A
conduction block in the axons of spinal nerves or roots
- motor axons - causes weakness
- sensory axons - causes parasthesia

what are the causes of radiculopathy?
A
- intervertebral disc prolapse - usually lumbar
- degenerative disease of the spine - e.g. spinal canal stenosis - most commonly cervical spine
- malignancy
- infection

what are the clinical features of radiculopathy?
A
- sensory - parasthesia and numbness
- motor - weakness
- radicular pain - burning, deep strap like pain (arises due to irritation of the spinal nerve tissue)

what needs to be assessed?
A
- red flags for cauda equina
2. pin point the dermatomal and myotomal involvement

what are the red flags for cauda equina syndrome?
A
- faecal incontinence
- urinary rention
- saddle anaesthesia

Mx
A
- analgesia
- amitryptyline - first line
- benzos for muscle spasm
- physiotherapy
