Radiculopathies In Class Flashcards

Because you see both motor and sensory deficits, it cant be something purely motor like ALS

Froment sign
DDx; C8 radiculopathy, lower trunk plexopathy, ulnar neuropathy (need MRI and EMG)

Key words: Radiating (think coming from a root), not very specific- positive straight leg raising test- this stretches nerves to elicit pain
Ddx: Sciatic nerve neuropathy (contains S1), S1 radiculopathy
Not on Ddx: peroneal neuropathy (doesnt affect ankle reflexes)

H-wave is basically an ankle reflex

S1 compression causing CSF indention
DDx: C6 radiculopathy, median neuropathy, carpal tunnel

Digit 1 (C6), digit 3 (C7), and digit 5 (C8) (test question)
Note: no radiating

C6 compression

Dorsiflexor is mainly tibialis anterior (deep peroneal, L4-L5)
Evertors (deep peroneal, L5-S1)

How does carpal tunnel syndrome present (test question)?
Episodic whole hand numbness and tingling (episodic tingling first and then progresses to numbness as the nerve starts to die- less symptomatic)
Present upon awakening
Precipitated by sustained limb elevation (driving, etc.)
No pain until pronounced
Occurs spontaneously while seated at rest (occurs when youre doing nothing)
Siatic gives off tibial nerve behind the tibia to innervate gastroc, soleus, and foot invertors
