Radicalisation of Scotland 1917 - 1920 Flashcards
What was The munitions act
The munitions act was created to maximise the production of wartime essential’s such as ammunition ships planes and tanks. However it restricted changes of jobs and limited the freedom of British labourers.
What was the CWC (Clyde Workers Committee)
it was a group focusing on bettering the lives of the workings along the Clyde. They would succeed their goal via protests and strikes. They were lead by Willie Gallagher and David Kirkwood two prominent socialists. The third one John McLean would later join.
What was DORA (Defence Of The Realm Act)
The Defence Of The Realm Act was created to prevent state secrets spilling out to the enemy’s. This however infringed on the Scots freedoms as it did not allow them to do certain things such as fly a kite and only allowed pubs to be open for 5 and a half hours.
How did conscription prompted radicalism in the Scots?
This was the processes of forced army enlistment. This angered the Scots as it was seen as a foreign thing or a non British thing as Britain had always had a volunteer army and never had to resort to conscription
How did the 40 hour strike prompt radicalisation?
The 40 hour strike was organised by the CWC. This was to bring about a 40 hour work week for the returning soldiers. This would allow them to work. This quickly became known as Bloody Friday and would result in Red Clydeside rearing it’s Ugly communist head.
