Radiation regulations Flashcards
What does the Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR) 2017 apply to
Applies to work in radiation areas, regulating the use of ionising radiation does not apply to patients.
What should IRR sites have
RPA radiation protection advisor) and an RPS (radiation protection supervisor)
what is a designated area
a site that uses ionising radiation, they must be controlled/supervised.
What is the role of an RPA
*Provide specific training for staff.
*Make staff aware of the risks, radiation protection measures.
*Inform pregnant employees of risks to the foetus and nursing infant.
What is regulation 17
destination of controlled and supervised areasw
what is a controlled area
an area where a person is likely to receive and effective dose greater than
6mSv/yr – MY LIMIT VERY IMPORTANT (Classified person)
15mSv/yr – to the lens of the eye
150mSv/yr – to the skin
what is my dose
6mSv/yr
what is an example of a controlled area in the department
LINAC treatment room
define a supervised area
where a person is likely to receive an effective dose greater than 1mSv/yr
what is an example of a supervised area in the department
the control room
what do regulations 24,25,26,27 apply to
*Applies to accidents and over-exposure.
*Requires medical surveillance.
*Investigation and notification of overexposure
why should we limit dose
no such thing as a safe dose ALARA principle, therefore we should use as little dose as possible to achieve the maximum result.§
what does the Ionising radiation (medical exposure) regulations 2017 IMMR apply too
Information given to the patient must outline the benefits and risks, and the patients must be informed before exposure – we get this through informed consent.
name the important duty holders and their roles
1.Referrer – the individual referring the treatment, must justify it through a risk benefit analysis.
2.Operator – may have no medical knowledge, will optimise the treatment.
3.Practioner – designated radiographer, will optimise the treatment.
what id the duty of candour
- Notify patients when things go wrong as soon as possible
- Provide reasonable support
- Apologise
- Report it.
