Radiation Flashcards
What charge is on an Electron?
Negative.
What charge is on a Proton?
Positive.
What charge is on a Neutron?
Neutral.
What is most of an atom?
Empty space.
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons v
What is a radioactive substance?
A substance that gives out radiation.
How can radioactive substances be stopped from giving out radiation?
There is no way.
What is the pattern of Radioactive decay?
Random.
How does temperature affect radioactive decay?
It doesn’t.
What is background radiation?
Radiation that is always there.
What is an alpha particle made of?
Helium nuclei.
What is a Helium Nuclei made of?
Two neutrons and two protons
How fast do alpha particles move?
Slowly.
What is the penetration of alpha particles?
Very little penetration that doesn’t go far.
How ionising are Alpha particles and how does this affect penetration?
They are large, so are very ionising. They hit a lot of atoms and knock of their electrons and this causes them to slow down.
What does ionising mean?
Bashing off the electrons of other atoms.
