Life Cycle Of Stars Flashcards
What force causes nebulas to become Protostars?
Gravity causes them to pull together
What are nebulas?
Clouds of gas and dust in space.
What is Gravitational Energy turned into inside a Protostar?
Heat energy.
What nuclear process makes a sun give out light and heat?
Nuclear fusion
In a protostar, what happens when it becomes very very hot?
The temperature is high enough for nuclear fusion to occur. This causes Hydrogen nuclei to become Helium and for massive amounts of heat and light to be given out.
What comes after a Protostar?
A main sequence star
Which part of a stars life is longest?
Main Sequence Star
What is the opposite force to the inwards force of Gravity?
Fusion pushes out and Gravity pushes in.
What is the opposite force to Fusion?
Fusion pushes out and gravity pushes in.
What is the balance of Gravity to Fusion in a Main Sequence Star?
The force of Fusion is equal to the Gravity around the Main Sequence Star. Making it stay at the same size.
Why can the star stay in main sequence for millions of years?
Because it has lots of Hydrogen.
What happens when the Hydrogen starts to run out?
Fusion of heavier elements begins. The larger the star the heavier the elements it can fuse up to.
What happens when heavy elements start to be made in a Star?
The inwards force of Gravity shrinks the inside but the suns swell out.
What does a big star become at the end of its main sequence?
It becomes a Super Red Giant.
What does a Small main sequence star become?
A Red Giant.
