Radiation Flashcards
What is atomic mass
The total number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus
What is an atomic number
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom
How do you work out the number of electrons in an atom using the periodic table?
The atomic number which is at the bottom (same as the protons)
How do you work out the number of neutrons in an atom using the periodic table?
Mass number (top) - atomic number (bottom)
What does alpha radiation consist of?
2 protons & 2 neutrons (helium nucleus)
What does beta radiation consist of?
High energy electron
What does gamma radiation consist of?
Electromagnetic wave
What stops alpha radiation?
A few cm of air, skin or sheet of paper
what stops beta radiation?
A few millimetres of aluminium or metres of air
What stops gamma radiation?
Several metres of concrete or several centimetres of lead
What are some examples of background radiation?
Ground and buildings
Radon gas
Food and drink
Cosmic rays
Medical
