What is Racism?
A failure of justice!
Definition of Race
A group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits shared by the group. Most biologists and anthropologists do not recognize race as a biological classification.
Three categories of Race
- Physical (visible traits)
- Socially Constructed
- Hierarchical Category (historical individuals)
Definition of racism
The belief that race accounts for difference in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
Prejudice
Unjust beliefs/attitudes based on race
Discrimination
Unjust actions based on race
Systematic Racism
The systematic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another
Biblical Justice
Conformity to God’s moral standard as revealed in the Ten Commandments and the Royal Law: Love your neighbor as yourself
Communitive Justice
Living in right relationship with God and others; giving people their due as image-bearers of God
Distributive Justice
Impartially rendering judgement, righting wrongs, and meting out punishment for lawbreaking. Reserved for God and God-ordained authorities including parents in the home, elders in the church, teachers in the school, and civil authorities in the state
Racism is a failures of the four dues of divine image bearers:
We owe love
We owe respect
We owe honor
We owe impartiality
Partiality
Unfair or undue favoring of one party or side in a debate, dispute, etc; bias, prejudice
Critical Theory
Large area of knowledge, spawning entire disciples of different theories. Views reality through the lens of power, dividing people into oppressed groups and oppressed groups along various axes like race, class, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, and age
