What were the ‘Jim Crow’ laws?
They were laws passed in the southern states that enforced segregation.
Black people were made to use different facilities from white people, including cafes, toilets and transport.
Black schools were less equipped
Black people had the right to vote but white southerners made it difficult for them. Often adding a law that said they needed to be literate. Other states threatened black people with violence to stop them from voting.
Was there racism in the North?
Yes.
They did not have segregation laws but black people lived in separate neighbourhoods- usually the worst part of a town, meaning schools tended to be all black anyway.
No.
Black people were more likely to get an equal life in the North. More chance of an education and a longer time in education. Many black people living in the South moved to the North in the hope of a better life.
What was lynching?
This is when a mob kills someone because the people of the mob believe the person they lynch have committed a crime.
How was a lynch victims murdered?
They often beat and tortured their targets and hanged their bodies from a tree.
Who were the Ku Klux Klan?
In 1915 when the KKK was reformed it aimed to be a WASP nation (white Anglo-Saxon Protestants). They believed people who did not fit under this should be driven out of the country.
They wore white robes and hoods to hide their identity, although everyone knew who a local Klan member was, this included members of the police and local governments.
Who was W.E.B Du Bois?
He helped set up the Niagara Movement and the NAACP. He worked for integration (white an black Americans living together in peace) and the rights of black Americans.
Who was Marcus Garvey?
He set up the UNIA and wanted to end racism, like the NAACP except he was a separatist. He believed white people ran the USA and black people would always feel second class. He believed Africa was the place for Africans (and those that were scattered by slavery).
