What is racism??
Theory that distinctive characteristics and abilities are determined by race
What is race?
Classification of people according to genetic and physical characteristics
Define racialism
Belief in superiority of a particular race
Define ethnicity
Racial or ethnic identity related to cultural, language and religious similarities
Define ethnocentrism
Judging other cultures by ones own cultural standards
What is stereotyping??
Labelling whole groups with generalised characteristics
What are scapegoats??
Blaming an individual or group for the problems caused by others
What is imperialism?
Establishment of power/authority/rule by one country or group over another group, country, territory or geographical area
Define colony
Physical result if imperialism - one area or country that had been taken over and controlled
Define empire
Group of colonies under the control of one power. Can be one geographical area or around the world

What are settlement colonies?
Migrants from mother country set up settlements based in European systems (political, economic) and try to re-educate native populations
What are colonies of management??
Small group of Europeans control large numbers of native population and direct them in the production of resources
What are plantation colonies??
Where the labour and/or crops are imported
What are trading posts??
Small number of Europeans buy trade goods from locals
