Assimilation
A process in which minority groups or a social category lose their distinctive identities and conform to cultural patters of the dominant group
Culture Pluralism
When racial and ethnic groups cooperate while still retaining their distinctive identities and lifestyles. In some cases, culture pluralism reflects tolerance and accommodation on the part of the dominate groups, or their attempts to promote ethnic diversity to maintain power by a system of divide and rule.
Stereotype
Oversimplified ideas about a group or social category; generalizations or assumption about the characteristics of a group or individual
Races
Categories of people set apart from others because of socially defined physical characteristics
Racial identity
A socially constructed category about a group of people based on generalized physical features like skin color hair types and shape of eyes.
Ethnic group
A category of people set apart from others because of distinctive customs and lifestyles
Prejudice
Preconceived notions about a category if people. It is an attitude.
Discrimination
Unequal treatment of people because of their group membership. It is an action.
Genocide
The deliberate and systematic elimination if minority group members.
Gender
Socially constructed understanding of what constitutes masculinity and femininity
Gender roles
The social and cultural expectations associated with a persons sex
Gender identity
Acknowledging ones sense of being make or female, both or neither; the internal identity May or may not be expressed outwardly, and not correspond to ones physical characteristics.
Gender expression
The manner in which a person outwardly represents their gender, regardless of the physical characteristics that might typically define them as make or female
Questioning
Described an individual who is unsure about their sexual orientation or gender identity
Asexuality
Describes individuals who have a lack of sex drive or interest in sex
Homosexuality
Sexual attraction to partners of the same sex
Heterosexuality
Sexual attraction to partners of the opposite sex
Intersexed
Refers to an individual born with the anatomy or physiology that differs from societal ideals of female or make
Queer
Term used to describe people who do not identify as heterosexual. Has taken on negative connotation when used by someone not a part of the LGBTQ community.
Sexual orientation
An enduring emotional, romantic, sexual, affection a land relational attraction to another person
Transgender
Refers to individuals who have been assigned to gender but identify as the opposite gender. Their biological assigned sex does not match their mental and emotional conception of self.
Cisgender
Term for individuals whose biologically assigned sex matched their mental and emotional conception of self
Transvestite
A person who dresses as the binary opposite gender expression for any one of many reasons, including relaxation, fun, and sexual gratification often called a cross dresser
Heteronormative
Denoting or relating to a world view that promotes heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation
