What is the main reason we have race and ethnicity
Categorize and characterize populations
What is race
Indication of a group of people characterized by a close common characteristic ie skin colour
What is a good use of using race
- form identity
- forms a sense of belonging and worth
What are some significant problems with race?
- Does not take into account biological adaptation to environments
- Groups have not been isolated enough to see
the difference
What were some way race was classified
- Fingerprints
- Ability to digest milk
- Genetics
What is ethnic?
ideology used to identify a cultural region
What is an ethnic region (Ethnicity)?
An area with people of the same cultural heritage that voluntrarily choose to live together
When was the concept of enthicity adopted?
Adopted into the Oxford English Dictionary in 1972
What is the differnece between Race, Ethinicity, and Racialisation?
- Race = Indication of a group of people characterized by a close common attribute ie skin colour
- Ethnicity = Shared or communcal characteristics considered to form a basis of identity
- Racialisation = process where human physical and cultural features are transformed into racial identities/images
What is ethnicity?

What does Internalized Racialisation involve?
Racial beliefs within an individual
What does Structural Racialisation involve?
racial classification that spans across institutions and generations
What does Istituitional Racialisation involve?
Bias between instituintions
What does Interpersonal Racialisation involve?
Bigotry between individuals
