5 FACES OF OPPRESSION Flashcards
what is oppression
- prolonged treatment or exercise of authority
- reducing the potential of making others feel human
Who’s view does 5 FACES OF OPPRESSION come from
Iris Marion Young
1949 - 2006
what was Young’s view on oppression
structural:
- part of the system that we live in
- does not have to be done by one given person - immobilizes one group because they are different
- eg, gay men, African Americans,
what is an example of unconcsious oppression
system-wide constraint:
- how cities are designed that marginalised
- hostile architecture
What are the 5 FACES OF OPPRESSION
- Exploitation
- Marginalization
- Powerlessness
- Cultural Imperialism
- Violence
what is exploitation
using people’s labour without compensating them for their work fairly
- slavery
- sweatshops
give 3 examples of exploitaiton
sweatshops:
- $14 polo cost $5.67 to actually make
- workers get 12 cents of that sales price
african miners:
- have to rent their own mining tools
- forced to find things otherwise they would be in debt
institutions and division of labour:
- workers are not able to make decisions on their own (lack of autonomy)
what is marginalisation
confining people to the edge of society, rendering them useless often racially marked
what do you call people that are marginalised
marginals
give examples of marginals
- elderly
- mentally and physically disabled
- homeless people
what are marginals often subject to
deprivvation of resources or extermination:
- e.g geneocide of native americans
- arboriginals in australia
- hostile architecture
what is powerlessness
the lack of autonomy (decision making power)
- often found in division of labour where the worker cannont make decisions of their own
characterisitics of a powerless person/group
- has no voice
- must take orders
- lack status
- lack of sense of self
how are the 5 FACES OF OPPRESSION linked to division of labour
- clear authority - powerlessness
- there are some people that just don’t work - marginalisation
- content of work defines their position in an instituitin
- e.g cook vs manager
what is cultural imperialism
when one group of people envoke their values, morals, experiences, and cluture on another
