Discrimination
act of treating someone unfairly based on prejudice values against them
prejudice
the act of stereotyping a specific group of people, negative attitude or belief about a group of people
stereotype
generalized belief about a specific group of people
individual racism
how people treat each other based on prejudices, stereotypes, etc.
institutionalized racism
systematic racism that is built into our political and social institutions within our society
Social construction of race
roths multidemsional typology of race:
- how you identify yourself
- how others perceive your race
- phenotypes
- how someone categorizes themselves based on how people perceive them
- racial ancestry
one-drop rule
if you have even one black african ancestor, you were considered to be black, different between states
contact hypothesis
the more interactions you have with people that are in a different group than you, this decreases our negative attitudes towards them
