Social stratification
social inequality built into the surface of society
- slavery = one person owning another
- caste = born into your social class
- estate = divides society into 3 sectors; church, workers, fighters
- social class = social position is determined by socioeconomic status
social inequality
the unequal distribution of valued resources, and opportunities
Social mobility
movement between ones social class
- open = allows for mobility between strata
- closed = does not allow for mobility between strata
- horizontal = moves between the same social class
- vertical = moves up or down a social class
meritocracy
system in which a persons social status is achieved through working harder, position you earned (capitalism)
aristocracy
system in which people are born into social class (can’t be changed)
prestige
the respect and admiration that a status holds within society
power
the ability to get others to do what you want them to do
wealth
total amount of assets + properties - debt
