Caused by…
Rhabdovirus. Single stranded RNA virus.
Who does rabies affect?
All warm blooded animals.
Rabies in Wisconsin wildlife is found in?
Bats, raccoons, and skunks.
Can be transmitted a few days before signs appear. How long in dogs and cats?
Dogs= 5-7 days prior Cats= 3 days prior
Disease path of rabies?
Fatal within 10 days after signs start.
Once virus enters brain the signs start to appear.
In dogs most cases of rabies occurs 20-80 days after viral exposure.
Clinical signs in dogs?
Behavioral change. Paralysis. Eating dirt/sticks… Dysphagia (can’t drink/swallow). Profuse salivation. Aggressiveness.
Clinical signs in cats?
Behavioral problems. Excitatory phase. May attack suddenly. Progressive paralysis.
Clinical signs in equine?
Ataxia(clumsy). Biting at you. Distress and agitation. Roll around. Increase vocalization.
Clinical signs in cattle?
Hind limb ataxia and weakness. Butt objects, attack, and pursue animals/humans. Lactation will stop. Yawning and tail paralysis. Facial expressions will change.
