Saliva of infected animal entering through a bite wound, open wound or MM
What are the 3 stages of Rabies?
- Prodromal
- Excitative (furious)
- Paralytic
What happens during the Prodromal stage of Rabies?
Changes in behavior; greatest risk of exposure for humans
What happens during the Excitative (furious) stage of Rabies?
-Hyperreactivity
-Unprovoked attacks of people and inanimate objects
-Stupor “Dumb Rabies”
What happens during the Paralytic stage of Rabies?
- Ascending Paralysis
- Respirtory Paralysis
- Death
Clinical Signs of Rabies
Behavioral Changes
Depression
Stupor
Hypersalivation
Difficulty Swallowing
Hindlimb Ataxia
Diagnosis of Rabies
Vaccine History
Postmortem exam of brain tissue
Positive Fluorescent antibody test
Treatment/Prevention
No Treatment: euthanasia reccomended
Prevention: Vaccination
If Exposed and Vaccinated, Revaccinate and observe for 90 days.
