Rabies Flashcards
What causes it
Rhadbovirus
Who gets rabies
Anyone in contact with a rabid animal and gets bitten
How is rabies spread
Once the virus reaches the saliva of an animal and then that animal bites someone the virus is spread
What are the pathophys of the virus
- bitten by a rabid animal - rabies virus enters the animal through infected saliva- rabies virus spreads through the nerves to the spinal cord and brain - virus then incubated for 3-12 weeks and there are no signs of illness- when it reaches the brain it begins to multiple rapidly and pass through the salivary glands and this is well symptoms start to show- then dies within 7 days of being sick
What are the symptoms and stages in humans
-Incubation for 20-60 days
-first symptoms are flu like: fever anxiety, tingling and bite site tenderness
- after 2-10 days, neurological signs arise, ranging from hyper activity to paralysis
What are the Two forms
Encephalic: signs of irritation of the CNS , confusion, hydrophobia, hypersalivation , the symptoms are episodic
Paralytic: most damage in the hypothalamus , interferes with the cardiorespiratory control
How do we dignose it
In animals diagnosis is post-death
In humans we do not wait but they take saliva or sputum samples
Or if they know and have the animal they can get that animal tested
How do we treat it
-Wash the would with soap and water
- vaccine is given over the span of 4 days
- once symptoms appear there is no treatment that can work
How do we prevent
Give animals vaccines and stay away from rabid animals
