Caged rabbits being kept in most places in hutches

Introduced to wild but failed except in Tasmania where they were a problem by 1860’s

24 wild rabbits introduced- 2 years later thousands were present and increasing due to more imports
1970
Commercial trapping for skins, hats, tinned and frozen meats
1880-1907
Rabbit fence built didn’t work though and took five years to build
19th century
Infectious diseased became better understood and work was taking place to find a disease to control the rabbits. Field trials took place but were unsuccessful
1950
Myxomatosis introduced to New South Wales looked as if it hadn’t worked the couple of months later rabbits started dying and inoculation of the rest of rabbits began
Seasonal outbreaks in myxomatosis
Due to weather and breeding of mosquito vectors

RHD trials begun and insects got into the quarantine and spread it
Success in Australia due to
Generalist, lack of predators, utilisation of wombat burrows, pre adapted to climate
