R1;L3-L4 Flashcards
Give the formal definition of motor learning
Set of of internal processes associated with practice or experience leading to relatively permanent change in the capability for movement
What does internal processes mean?
This is CNS activity that isn’t just in the brain, but is the process and execution of movement, memory, and processes for learning. We can learn by thinking.
What is practice or experience (relative to the definition of motor learning) ?
This is the use of feedback that can be acquired from an individual or external factor that is used to change future performance
What are relatively permanent changes? (Relative to the motor learning definition)
The functional skills that have to maintain improved movement to be considered permanent.
What is the capability for movement? (Relative to the definition of motor learning)
The word movement can be substituted with activity
What is performance? Explain some characteristics of performance.
Performance is the behavioural act of executing a skill at a specific time during a specific situation.
Characteristics:
- performance cannot be observed
- performance is temporary
- may not be due to practice
- may be influenced by performance variables
What are performance variables?
These are characteristics that influence performance, such as anxiety, stress, and setting.
What is learning?
Learning is the set of permanent improvement in performance. Change is the capability of a person to perform a skill.
What are the five characteristics of motor learning?
What are the definitions of each?
Improvement: slowly start to gain better knowledge and motor skills on a subjected task. Improvement is formal change in the practice.
Persistency: this is the retention of a skill, can the person perform this task in the following future continuously?
Consistency: this is the variability of the performance. This is how much a person varies from trial to trail. SD is important in measuring variability.
Stability: if you can perform the task under various circumstances
Adaptability: this is transferring the skills to different performances. The motion patterns must be changed in order to be successful .
What are the three types of learners—explain them.
Quick learner: able to transfer skills from one task to another, hence why they learn quickly.
Normal learner: slow rate of peak performance, person is still learning
Popcorn learner: little improvement at beginning, eventually catches up
What are retention tests bad at assessing? Why?
They are bad at assessing adaptability. The reasons for this is that retentions ask you to do the same task over again.
What do transfer tests assess?
How the learning experience can be generalized
What is the best type of test?
A transfer test with retention intervals without KR and AG
