R/T Failure Flashcards
Radio Failure procedures shall be adopted when?
- an aircraft is observed to have selected A7600, and the pilot does not respond to ATC communication;
- communication cannot be maintained with an aircraft on any flight which is being provided with an ATC or advisory service;
- communication cannot be established with an aircraft operating, or intending to operate, on an IFR flight plan within controlled or advisory airspace.
Who shall be informed of an apparent R/T Failure?
ATS unit shall forward info to all ATS units along the route.
- The ACC in the area of destination aerodrome.
It attempts to establish two way radio comms have failed, what should the ATCO do?
- Maintain separation between the radio failure aircraft and other known traffic;
- Give pertinent information about the movements of the radio failure aircraft to other aircraft in the presumed vicinity;
- Ask aircraft in the presumed vicinity to establish communication with the radio failure aircraft and relay messages;
- Use all means possible to monitor the aircraft’s progress;
- Attempt to relay information using ACARS/datalink.
PSR
- ATCO to instruct the AC to make turns, if position indicator indicates the AC receiver is operating, ATCO to keep passing instructions and resume normal service.
- if AC doesn’t respond to instructions, ATCO shall maintain separation of other known AC
SSR
- ATCO shall instructions AC to squawk IDENT, if AC receiver is operating, the AC may continue using transponder replies
- if receiver is not operating, pilots may select A7600 and follow procedures
VMC Procedures for Pilots
- Select A7600 - Mode C
- land at nearest aerodrome
- take account of visual landing aids
- keep watch for visual signals from the ground
If given ATC clearance, AC may enter controlled airspace and follow above procedures
If not given ATC clearance, AC should not enter controlled airspace unless an overriding safety concern compels entry.
When VMC cannot be maintained, adopt IMC procedures
IMC Procedures for Pilots
- Select A7600 - Mode A
- maintain for 7 minutes, the current speed and last assigned level or MSA, whichever higher.
7 mins begin when transponder is set to A7600
IMC Procedures for Pilots
SID
- continue on published lateral track and vertical profile, including any step climbs, until last position, fix or waypoint.
- any of the 7 minutes remain, maintain current speed and lat assigned level or MSA, whichever higher.
- thereafter, adjust speed and level in accordance with current FPL and continue flight to landing aid at destination aerodrome.
IMC Procedures for Pilots
STAR
- if 7 minutes period has been completed, arrange descent as close as possible to the descent profile.
- if no published profile arrange descent to minimum published level at the designated IAF
IMC Procedures for Pilots
RNAV
- if being vectored or proceeding offset to RNAV, continue last ATC instructions for 3 mins only and rejoin the current FPL route.
- ensure to remain at or above MSA
IMC Procedures for Pilots
SVFR
- if equipped squawk A7600 and mode C
If not yet entered the CTR
- must in all cases remain clear of CTR even if clearance has been obtained.
If already entered CTR
Inbound
- proceed in accordance with SVFR Clearance and land as soon as possible (watch for visual signals)
Transiting
- continue flight not above cleared altitude to leave CTR ASAP by most direct route, taking into account weather and obstacle clearance.
