Q

“HER VOICE IS FULL OF MONEY”

A

The use of a metaphor tells us that there is an apparent presence of wealth in Daisy’s being. She is socially secure in society and is comfortable in her new position and it is this that Gatsby so greatly admires. Daisy stands for Gatsby wishes to have and to be.

Q

“I THINK HE REALISES HIS PRESUMPTUOUS LITTLE FLIRTATION IS OVER”

Q

“I FOUND MYSELF ON GATSBY’S SIDE ALONE”

A

Gatsby appears to have had no real impact on the people around him. He would throw lavish parties, to which hundreds of people would attend on a daily basis yet not one of them took the time to get to know the real Gatsby, not the ‘Gatsby’ which was subject to daily rumours of criminal behaviour etc.

Q

“IM SORRY ABOUT THE CLOCK”

A

The clock symbolises Gatsby’s mentality of thinking he can stop time because He catches the clock. Also, despite the fact that Gatsby actually caught the clock, Nick and Daisy act as if the clock has smashed, which provides an uncomfortable and awkward tension in the room. This helps us to understand just how awkward the meeting between Gatsby and Daisy was.

Q

“PULLED HIS FACE DOWN, KISSING HIM ON THE MOUTH. YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU”

A

Daisy acts childish and immature by doing things like kissing Gatsby and telling him she loved him, all whilst under the same roof as her husband and daughter. She is careless with her affair which suggests a lack of true feelings for Gatsby, as if she only intended to use him to get back at her husband for having an affair. Gatsby however see’s this as a confirmation of his and Daisy’s relationship and therefore as a confirmation that He and Daisy can be together, that she will finally leave her husband.

Q

“DAISY TUMBLED SHORT OF HIS DREAMS”

A

Since he last spoke to daisy - 5 years ago - HE has been building up a picture in his head of what there reunion and relationship would be like. This image however had been exaggerated as he has had an awful long time to fabricate a version of daisy in his head which he deems to be perfect. This is an unrealistic ideal in which he has set and therefore we see Nick point out that He must be disappointed with the present outcome.

“THEY WERE CARELESS…

A

“THEY WERE CARELESS PEOPLE TOM AND DAISY, THEY SMASHED UP THINGS AND CREATURES THEN RETREATED BACK INTO THEIR MONEY OR THEIR VAST CARELESSNESS, OR WHATEVER IT WAS THAT KEPT THEM TOGETHER, AND LET OTHERS CLEAN UP THE MESS THEY HAD MADE”

A quote from Nick regarding Tom and Daisy as it is revealed that they both disappeared soon after Gatsby’s death, Nick shows a completely lack of respect for them. Daisy was supposedly in love with Gatsby yet we see that she has relocated with her husband and not bothered to show up at his funeral
