Quotes Flashcards
Mark 10 (unity)
For this reason…
“’For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.”
Matthew 19 (adultery)
“I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery”
Leviticus 20
“ If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads”
Timothy 2
“ I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet”
Galatians 3 (equality)
“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”
Genesis 1
“Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”
Genesis 1
Second card
“Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Jeremiah 1 (womb)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations”
Matthew 5 (non-retaliation)
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also”
Matthew 5
Second card
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”
Both Matthew 5 texts are taken from Jesus’ teaching in a bit of Matthew’s Gospel known as the Sermon on the Mount. One contrasts the Old Testament teaching with Jesus’ teaching of non-retaliation. The other emphasises agapeic love – unconditional love, even for enemies, as a sign of a Christian. Loving people who love you is not enough.
Matthew 18 (forgiveness)
“Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven times”
Matthew 25 (brethren)
“In as much as you did it for the least of one of these my brethren, you did it to me”
Martin Luther King
“An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. It destroys communities and makes humanity impossible. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers”
Pope Francis
“Even if the life of a person has been a disaster, even if it is destroyed by vices, drugs, or anything else—God is in this person’s life. You can, you must try to seek God in every human life”
Pope Francis (image of marriage)
“God’s image is the married couple, a man and woman, together. Not just the man. Not just the woman. No, both of them. That’s God’s image.”
