Quiz1 Flashcards
Aperature
A circular opening in the lens that controls the light reaching the image sensor
Brightness
The value assigned to a pixel to define the relative lightness of a pixel. In color, the amount of lightness or darkness in the color
Color
Aspect of an image made up of a hue, saturation and brughtness
Composite
In photography, an image composed of two or more parts of an image, taken either from a single photo or from multiple photos. Usually, composites are created so that the elements blend smoothly together.
Contrast
The difference in brightness between the darkest and lightest areas of an image or subject
Creation tools
A group of tools in photoshop designs to create new pixels, such as text and shape
Crop
To trim an image or page by cutting away its boundaries
Depth of field
A distance dance in a photograph in which all included portions of an image are in focus. Variable by aperture, focal length or subject distance.
Desaturate
To reduce the purity or vividness of color, making color appear to be washed out or diluted
Digital image
A computer generated photograph composed of pixels rather than film grain
Digital media
Any message that has been stored electronically and coded as numbers
Exposure
The amount of light allowed to reach the film or sensor, determined by the intensity of the existing light, te amount admitted by the lens, and the length of time determined by the shutter speed.
Feather
The action of softening the edge of a digital selection
Filter
In image editing, a feature that changes the pixels in an image to produce blurring, sharpening and other special effects
Focus
To adjust the lens to produce a sharp image
Framing
In photography, composing your image in the viewfinder. In composition, using elements of an image to form a sort of picture frame around an important subject
Hue
The name of a color, the spectral wavelength of the color
Image size
The pixel dimensions, output dimensions and resolution used to define a digital image.
JPEG
joint photographic experts group- a file format that supports 24-bit color and reduces file sizes by selectively discarding image data. Digital cameras generally use JOEG compression to pack more images onto memory cards
Landscape
Horizontal orientation
Layer
A feature in digital editing software that allows a composite digital image where each element is on a separate layer
Marching ants
A moving broken line indicating a digital selection of pixelx
Mergers
Distracting background objects that appear to be attached to the subject of an image
Modification tools
A group of tools in photoshop designed to change existing pixels in an image
Opacity
Degree to which light is not allowed to pass through an image. Opposite of transparency
Orientation
Landscape or portrait
Perspective
The angle and position from which a photo is taken
Pixel
The smallest square picture element in a digital image
Pixelated
When pixels are visible
Portrait
Vertical
.psd
Image file which stores photoshop document
Resolution
An,erasure of degree of definition, sharpness
Rule of thirds
Divide frame into thirds to help place subjects
Saturation
Intensity, vividness, richness of color
Selection
An area of an image chosen for manipulation, usually surrounded by marching ants
Selection tools
A group of tools in photoshop designed to choose groups of pixels for manipulation
Shutter speed
Camera setting which determines the length in time which the film or device is exposed to light. Measured in fractions of seconds
Transparency
Degree to which light is allowed to pass through an image
Zoom
Enlarge or reduce the size of an image
