Pharmalogical strategies for combating primary hypertension
Diuretics:
A
- Thiazide diuretics
- inhibit Na+ and Cl- reabosrption in distal tubule–> water retention)
- decrease blood colume
- cheap and slow onset of action
eg: Chlorothiazide, bendrofluazide
Adverse effects:
-loss of potassium, uric acid retention, impotence, dizziness,
- Loop Diuretics:
Inhibit Na, K, Cl transport in ascending loope of henle
-results in retention of of the above and water in the tubule
Results in decreased renal vascular resistance and increased renal blood flow
-loop diuretics are most efficacous of diuretics
Therapeutic uses: reduces pulmonary oedema on CHF
Adverse effects: potassium depletion, otooxicity
examples:
-bumetanide
-furosemide
