Quiz 3 Topic 5 Flashcards
What the diff between climate and weather?
Weather- is conditions of atmosphere over a short period of time, climate- is how the atmosphere behaves over a long period of time and space
what was the temp between 1880-1951
1961-1990?
1901-2000?
14.2
14
13.9
What is a temp anomally?
Is measured tmep - normal temp (avg)
We go from negative anomalies to positive, what does that mean?
Means we are getting warmer than the numbers we compare it to
What are the two ways to change the temp of the earth?
Change the amount of solar radiation reaching the earth or changing the amount of GHG in the atmosphere.
What is the solar cycle?
is strength of sun which brightens and dims over 11 year cycle
How does solar cycle effect solar radiation?
when sun is brighter you get more solar radiation headed towards earth
Are changes in solar intensity responsible for climate change?
no, solar radiation is decreasing but temp is going up, solar radiation and temp were coupled until 1975
What are milankovitch cycles?
these are changes in the shape of the earths orbit over time
eccentricity- earth rotation goes from oval to more circle: happens every 100 000 years
precession- is like top wobbling happens every 19000 to 24000 years
tilt- happens every 41000 yrs (earth changes tilt on its axis)
milankovitch cycles largely correlate with known glaciations over the last 500 000 years
are milankovitch cycles responsible for climate change?
No, they are very predictable and show that solar radiation absorbed hasn’t changed much to account for temp change we see
What happens to temp if atmospheric reservoir increases?
temp increases
what’s causing climate change?
anthropogenic forcing
