Q

Natural selection

A

a process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than do other individuals because of those traits
over time, natural selection can increase the frequency of adaptations that are favorable in a given environment
if an environment changes, or if individuals move to a new environment, natural selection may result in adaptation to these new conditions, sometimes giving rise to new species
individuals do not evolve, populations do over time

Mutation

A

change in an organisms DNA sequence (random)
better adapted: depends/not consistent
increases genetic variation

gene flow

A

individuals or gametes move from one population to another
better adapted: depends/not consistent
effect on genetic variation varies (up or down)

genetic drift

A

allele frequencies change at random
better adapted: depends / harmful alleles become fixed in your population
decreases genetic variation
