In the Round
A form of audience seating layout where the acting the area is enclosed on all sides by seating. There are often s number of entrances through the seating
Backdrop/ backcloth/ drop
A piece of scenic canvas, painted or plain that is flown or fixed in a vertical position. Hangs at rear of scene
Blacks
1) black clothing worn by management and crew during productions
2) any black drapes or tabs, permanent or temp rigged. Used for masking technical areas
Borders (teasers)
A narrow horizontal masking piece (flats or cloth), normally of neutral color to mask the lighting rig and flown scenery from the audience and to provide an upper limit to the scene. Often used in conjunction with LEGS
Bounce
1) diffused light that has been reflected from lighting this curtain, walls, cyc, Etc.
2) describes the fast in/out movement of “bouncing” flown house curtain, used during curtain calls. This can also apply to the fast blackout/light up cues that happen at curtain calls
Chain pocket
Hem at bottom of curtain in which chain is inserted to keep curtain hanging vertically and inhibit additional movement after it has come to rest.
Preset
1) anything in position before the beginning of a scene or act such as props placed on stage before the performance, lighting state on stage as the audience are entering
2) an independently controllable section of a manual lighting board which allows the setting up of a lighting state before it is needed. Each preset has a master fader which selects the maximum levels of dimmers controlled by that preset
Props
Furnishings, set dressings, and all items large and small which cannot be classified as scenery, electrics, or wardrobe. Props handled by actors are known as “hand props”. In costume are personal props.
Proscenium arch
The opening in the wall which stands between stage and auditorium in some theatres. The picture frame through which the audience see the play. Sometimes ornate and painted.
Set
1) to prepare the stage for action
2) the complete stage setting. For a scene or act
Follow spot
A person who assigned to follow a performer that might be moving from location to location
Technical rehearsal
The first time the show is rehearsed in the venue with lighting, scenery, and sound. Costumes sometimes used, like with a quick change test. Often lengthy process.
Dry Tech
Without actors to rehearse the integration of lighting and scene changes, etc. follows a wet tech.
Wet tech
Full technical rehearsal with actors and all tech elements, although this term isn’t as often used as dry tech
