Quiz #3 Flashcards
what are the pillars of liberalism?
Democracy (DPT), IOs, Economy
Core principles of Liberalism?
1) belief in rational qualities of individuals
2) faith in the feasibility of progress in social life
3) humans, despite their self-identity, can cooperate & construct a more peaceful society
Define Kantian Peace?
where democracies will rarely fight or even threaten each other (where DPT comes from); they will refrain from using force against one another
What’s Democratic Peace Theory?
1) Dyadic: Dem. 1 + Dem. 2 = peace
2) DPT = consolidated democracy
what’s the normative aspect of DPT?
democracies operate internally on the principle that conflicts are to be resolved by negotiation & compromise, w/out resort to the threat or use of organized violence
liberal ideas -> ideology -> no wars against democracy -> constraints on gov. -> democratic peace
what’s the institutional aspect of DPT?
democratic leaders who fight a war are held accountable, through democratic institutions, for the costs and benefits of war
liberal ideas -> institutions -> free debate -> constraints on gov. -> democratic peace
what do liberal institutions do or try to do?
- try to explain cases where sts can’t cooperate bc. etch side has incentives to cooperate & to not
- can produce cooperation
- mainly applies to security and not political economy
what’s an institution?
a set of rules that stipulate the ways in which sts should cooperate & compete w/ each other
why has Liberalism seemingly become the big new theory?
- world conflict has decreased
- democracy has increased
- international trade has increased
- interstate conflict (civil wars) has increased
what are Kant’s constraints on Liberalism?
- democracies will refrain from using force against one another
- international trade will create incentives to maintain peaceful relations (may result in greater mutual understanding and empathy)
- international organizations can constrain decision-makers by positively promoting peace (like the UN)
is this a self-perpetuating system?
- dems. are easier to maintain in a peaceful enviornment
- trade & peace are reciprocally related (traders are reluctant to trade w/ or invest in countries that seem unstable)
- dems. trade more w/ each other (trade agreements are more likely to be kept)
- trade typically promotes prosperity (contributes to the development & stability of democracy)
what’s liberal pacifism? (and Schumpeter’s assumptions)
founded by capitalism and democracy (antithetical to imperialism)
- trains people in economic rationalism
- individualizes society (rational individuals will demand democracy)
assumptions:
- leaves little room for noneconomic objectives
- world politics are homogenized (all sts evolve toward free-trade and liberty TOGETHER)
what’s liberal imperialism? (Machiavelli)
republics aren’t pacifistic but are the best form of st for imperial expansion (the best way to ensure survival)
- strength and imperial expansion come from citizens knowing they’re secure from obituary seizure
what’s liberal internationalism?
1) the pacification of foreign relations among liberal sts (the “zone of peace” between them, which could grow into the world should liberalism grow)
2) international “imprudence”
(peaceful restraints only seem to work in liberals’ relations w/ other liberals & they don’t trust other non-liberals that much)
what’s Kant’s 1st Definitive Article about?
the civil constitution of every nation should be Republican (agrees w/ principles of freedom, dependence, and equality)
- the gov is elected by citizens, the gov decides who gets to go to war, soldiers are citizens, then when a st goes to war it can be assumed that its in the peoples best interest bc of the system above
