Undergo important changes in outlook and understanding as story progresses
Flat Character
character presented in outline (one or two traits), somewhat stereotyped; easy to describe
Round Character
complex character, like a real person - possesing both good and bad qualities - not stereotyped
Foreshadowing
dropping of important hints by the author to prepare the reader for what is to come and to help the reader anticipate the outcome

Symbolism
Use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities
Irony
mode of expression in which author says one thing and means the opposite. Situation, outcome of event, that is considered opposite of what might be expected to happen (verbal, situational and dramatic irony)
Juxtaposition
act or instance of placing two things close togther or side by side. Often done to compare/contrast the two, to show similarities or differnces. Quality of being unexpected
Sarcasm
Use of irony to mock or convey contempt
Satire
Writer critisizes or ridicules something indirectly, often making indirect parallels and references to things you know so that you realize that the writer is critisizing
