Oral Preparation Phase
Soft palate moves forward and down to touch the back of the tongue and close the passage to the pharynx
Oral Phase
-Begins once bolus is formed
-Bolus is moved from the front to the back of the mouth
-Oral transit usually takes 1-1.5 seconds
Pharyngeal Phase
-Pharyngeal phase is complete when pharyngeal esophageal segment opens and the food or liquid moves into esophagus
-Usually takes less than 1 second
Esophageal Phase
-Muscles of the esophagus move the bolus in contractions into the stomach
-Usually takes 8-20 seconds
Causes of Dysphagia
-Stroke
-TBI
-ALS
-Parkinson’s
-Dementia
Oral Phase Dysphagia Symptoms
-Difficulty initiating a swallow
-Food or liquids coming out of the nose
-Pocketing
-Drooling
-Oral Residue
Pharyngeal Phase Dysphagia Symptoms
-Coughing during or after a swallow
-Wet or gurgly voice after swallow
-Feeling of food being stuck in throat
Compensatory Strategies: Oral Phase
-Modified diet
-Cues to check for pocketing/residue
-Alternating bites of food with liquids
-Oral motor exercises

-Modified Liquid
