Quiz #2 Mr. Betancourt Flashcards
Field study
controlled experiment done in natural habitat
Independent variable
the 1 change added to the experimental setup
that causes a result different from the control setup
Dependent variable
the measured outcome/result cause by the independent variable
Control
part of controlled experiment that is left alone (no variable)
Constants
- factors between control & experimental setups that stay the same
Purposes of experiments
- to gather info (research) & test hypothesis
Procedures
- specific ordered steps to follow during an experiment
Scientific Method/Process
- guide to gathering information & answering questions (solving problems) *not steps to do an experiment*
Importance of only 1 variable
- 1 variable = 1 cause for outcome
Purpose of the control
- comparison for experimental setup’s results
Difference between control set-up and experimental set-up
- control stays normal & unchanged (no variable added) &
experimental setup gets 1 variable different from normal (control)
Parts of an experiment:
problem - question to investigate, shows cause & effect relationship
between independent & dependent variables
hypothesis - possible answer, If,…Then statement, shows cause &
effect relationship between independent & dependent variables
conclusion - summarizes purpose of experiment, explains outcomes,
and states if data supports hypothesis or not
data analysis - studying data for patterns and relationships between
variables & control in order to draw conclusions (inferences)
Appropriate laboratory behavior =
safe environment
Graph Data set up
- label X & Y axis,
Y-axis = dependent variable,
X-axis = independent variable & control
and time for a line graph
Relationship between independent & dependent variables
- cause and effect relationship between independent & dependent variables
