atmoshpere study guide Flashcards
Changes in air temperature are
cyclic
Temperature trend is
whether temperature increases or decreases with increasing altitude
what do you use to measure tempurature
thermometer
to measure air pressure,
a barometer
you use to measure the amount of rain with a
rain gauge,
to measure wind speed you use
an anemometer
to measure wind direction u use
a wind vane.
Factors affecting air pressure are
Altitude
Temperature
Humidity
Air is saturated when
it contains as much moisture as it can hold
Ability to hold moisture depends on
the temperature
the higher the temperature
the more moisture it can hold
if the temperature falls below the dew point
condensation occurs
A sling psychrometer
measures the dry bulb (air temperature) and the wet bulb temperature.
Relative humidity-
is a percentage of saturation compared to the air.
wind
is caused by heat flow in convection cells in the atmosphere and uneven heating of the Earth’s surface.
High Pressure
cool air is more dense and sinks- ( good weather happy)
Wind direction is named by
the direction it originates from
Warm air is
less dense and rises leads to low pressure
Wind blows fastest when
the air pressure gradient is the greatest (isobars of equal atmospheric pressure are closer together
Low pressure
lousy weather (hot weather, wet, rises, less dense)
Land Breeze-
- at night
- when the air moves from the land to the ocean
- causes the lower temperature air to move to the ocean, the higher temperature air to move to the land
- land has a higher pressure
ocean has a lower pressure
Sea Breeze-
- hot summer day
- land heats up more quickly than sea
- the low pressure is over the land
- high pressure is over the sea
- wind blows from sea to land.
Coriolis Effect-
Earth’s rotation causes the path of wind to curve
due to the Coriolis effect In the Northern Hemisphere the wind curve
is to the right
due to the Coriolis effect In the Southern Hemisphere the wind curve
is to the left
High Pressure (wind)-
wind blows outward- clockwise and anti cyclone
low pressure (wind)-
wind blows inward- counter clockwise - cyclone
Jet Streams-
Very fast wind currents that flow in the upper atmosphere that do not follow surface wind patterns
jet streams blow from
west to east
Weather-
is the short term condition in a specific location due to the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface
Clouds form from
- warm air rises
- then it expands
- then it cools
- then it condenses
- condensation nuclei
