What is a contraindication?
A contraindication is a symptom or circumstance that makes a particular treatment inadvisable. In other words, massage is an inappropriate method of treating a particular condition that effects either the whole body or part of the body.
What is a modification?
A modification is a change to the initial treatment plan when massage is appropriate for the client, to allow for safe, effective treatment.
Examples of modification?
Modifications may be a technique choice, pressure and direction of technique, location and temperature, area treated and duration of treatment.
What are the different types of CI’s and modifications?
- Absolute CI to general conditions: can’t treat at all
- Absolute CI to local conditions: can’t treat area
- General conditions requiring modifications: possible adverse effects, must modify treatment
- Local conditions requiring modifications: must modify treatment just over a certain area
