Quiz 2 Flashcards
Synaptic Plasticity
The ability for synapses to change their strength.
Tracts
Bundles of axons in the CNS
Roots
The portion of an organ that is buried in tissues. Or it is the part of a nerve that is adjacent to the center to which it is connected.
Reflex
An automatic motor response triggered by a stimulus.
Homeostasis
The body’s tendency to maintain internal balance.
Primary Somatosensory Cortex
Where sensory info is processed in the cerebrum.
Peripheral Nervous System
The nervous system that includes everything except the brain and spinal cord.
Cerebellum
the posterior portion of the brain . It is involved with balance and position sense.
Cerebrum
The cerebrum allows us to perceive the world around us every second by processing sensory input.
Autonomic
Relating to the ANS; acting or occurring involuntarily movement.
Somatosensory
A sensory activity happening elsewhere than in the special sense organs.
Stroke
When brain cells are killed by lack of blood flow. Ischemic: when blood flow to brain is interrupted by a blockage.
Nerve
A bundle of axons located in the PNS
Circulate
Move freely throughout an enclosed space
Autonomic Nervous System
Division of the PNS consisting of motor fibers carrying impulses to multiple types of muscle.
Cerebral Hemispheres
One half of the cerebrum; left side controls right; right side controls left.
Blood Brain Barrier
To prevent harmful substances from coming into contact with brain tissue.
Dorsal Root Ganglion
The projections to the right and left of the spinal cord. The dorsal horns contain the axons of sensory neurons which bring sensory info from the body to the CNS.
