Quiz 1 Flashcards
Central Nervous System[CNS]
Brain and spinal cord
Somatic Definition
Relating to the body
Neuron Definition
Often called a nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses to the body.
Neuroglia Definition
Small cells surrounding the neuron found in both the CNS and PNS
Motor Neuron Definition
These carry impulses away from the CNS. These contain instructions to the muscles or to glands in the body.
Sensory Neuron Definition
These carry impulses triggered by sensory receptors toward the CNS.
Nerve Definition
A bundle of axons located in the PNS
Autonomic Nervous System
This controls our involuntary activities such as breathing and adjusting our heart rate
Depolarization Definition
a decrease in membrane potential, where the membrane potential becomes less and less negative and than positive.
Stimulus Definition
a change in the environment that triggers a neuron or a receptor
Synapse Definition
the area where a neuron communicates with another neuron or muscle cell
Brain Definition
one of the two parts of the CNS. The brain is the master control center of the human body.
Function of Neurotransmitters
the molecules that carry signals across the synaptic cleft
Myelinated Axon Function
Myelin sheath provides electrical insulation for axon
Peripheral Nervous System
portion of the NS outside the CNS. Consists of cranial nerves that extend from the brain and the spinal nerves that extend from the spinal cord.
