Quiz 2 Flashcards
Describe, in details, lipid digestion and transport across the intestinal lining.
Lipids enter rumen
Broken down through lipolysis and hydrogenation lipids
Lipids broken down into micelles in Small intestine by pancreatic lipase and bile salts.
Micelles broken down into chylomicrons
Go into the lymphatic system
Then spread throughout the body through the blood.
Describe how VFAs are produced and metabolized.
VFAs = Acetic acid, Propionic acid, and Butyric acid.
End products through fermentation of starch and fibers
Pyruvate forms Acetic acid, lactic acid, and fornic acid
Lactic acid = propionic acid (propionate)
Acetic acid = Butyric acid (butyrate)
Fornic acid used for waste.
Acetic Acid = most abundant and used by mammary gland for milk production
Propionic acid = go through TCA cycle to for glucose
Butyric acid = ketone bodies
Describe the major events regarding tissue organs and post-secretory metabolic transformation of lipoproteins within plasma compartment in ruminants.
Lipoproteins include: Chylomicrons, ULDL, IDL, LDL, and HDL
Chylomicrons and ULDL used for energy - more available and low density
ULDL - broken down into IDL - broken down into LDL
LDL - cholesterol transfer by LDL receptors
HDL - most abundant and used primarily for cholesterol transport
