Quiz 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What are suspensions?
A
- Non-homologous mixtures of 2+ substances
- Eventually separate into their components
- Ex., oil and water
2
Q
What are solutions?
A
- Homologous mixtures of 2+ substances
- Remains stable indefinitely
- Solvent in excess
3
Q
Describe percent concentration
A
- Amount of solute in a total volume of 100 mL of solution (solute/solution)
- Solid = grams, liquid = mL
- X parts per x = x amount per x mL
4
Q
What are dilutions?
State the dilution factor
A
- Making more concentrated solutions less concentrated by adding more solvent
- Dilution factor: final volume/original volume
- Ex., dilution factor of 10 = 10% –> 1% (10 fold, final volume is 10x original)
5
Q
What are serial dilutions?
A
- A serial dilution is the stepwise dilution of a substance in solution. Usually the dilution factor at each step is constant.
