Quiz #2 Flashcards
What are our two systems for making meaning?
1) Propositional- Logical, rational discrimination
2) Implicational- Emotional, Felt experiences
Propositional system?
1)
2)
DUI Model
The “Duality Unity Integrative” Model
is an East/West synthesis that takes a phenomenological approach (it does not debate the rationality or reality of one’s experience)
According to DUI model humans are in a persistent dance between duality (separate from the world) and the experience of unity
What are the two categories of subjective experience within the DUI model:
1) our experience of duality
and
2) our experience of the interplay between duality and unity
Existential dilemma of the WEST
Balance between autonomy/individuation on one side, and connecting with others and the world on the other side
Existential dilemma of the EAST
Balance betwen duality and unity
Our desire to maintain the existence of a seperate (dualistic) self within a world that is fundamentally unitive
Window of Tolerance
The degree of anxiety that is tolerable
Window of Tolerance
The degree of anxiety that is tolerable
The size is determined as a combination of the anxiety at the two poles of isolation anxiety and engulfment anxiety
What is the human dilemma of attachment anxiety?
Stuck between fear of isolation and fear of engulfment
Anxiety is often determined due to proximity to either of these two poles
If the combined level of anxiety is relatively high, then the window of tolerance will be:
Window of tolerance will be NARROW. Which indicates that the person will only be able to tolerate a narrow range of experiences.
If the combined level of anxiety is relatively low, then the window of tolerance will be:
Window of tolerance will be LARGE, which indicates that the person can tolerate a wide range of different experiences
The switch
The moment of change, as one mental state transforms into another
3 insecure attachment styles according to DUI model
1) Avoidant/Dismissive
2) Ambivalent/Anxious/Preoccupied
3) Disorganized
Avoidant/Dismissive attachment style
Apparent indifference to leave-takings and reunions
Ambivalent/Anxious attachment style
Severe stress at leave-takings but ambivalent at reunion
