Quiz #1 Flashcards
Consensual Reality
Beliefs and experiences that are considered valid according to society or group
Psychotic experience
anomalous experience that causes significant distress/limitation
Anomalous experience
A subjective experience (typically belief or sensory experience [sound, vision, smell, tactile sensation]) considered invalid within framework of consensus reality according to individuals society or group
2 important points about the significant stress associated with anomalous experiences during a psychotic experience
1) Distress is subjective- only the individual experiencing distress is capable of determining what is and is not distressing to them
2) Such distress may either arise directly from the anomalous experiences itself, for example, fear occurring as a direct result of auditory hallucinations OR arise from behavior that was a direct result of the anomalous experience
Paris’s Long-term psychosis
a psychotic episode that lasts for 1 month or longer or series of psychotic episodes which last a least 1 month (time is related to diagnosis)
Paris’s Recovery
a general diminishment of the distressing and / or limiting aspects of one’s anomalous experiences
Paris’s Full recovery
achieving a hemodynamic balance in which the distress of one’s subjective experiences is the same or less that which preceded the psychosis (adjusted)
Positive symptoms
adds a behavior, thought, or feeling to your experience (voices, delusions, etc.).
Negative symptoms
takes away a thought,feeling,or
behavior (diminishment)
Diminished emotional expression
includes reductions in the expression of emotions in the face, eye contact, intonation of speech and movements of the hand, head, and face that normally give an emotional emphasis to speech.
Avolition
is a decrease in motivated self-initiated purposeful activities. The individual may sit for long periods of time and show little interest in participating in work or social activities (this is not depression - but might look like it)
What are the five characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia?
1) Delusions
2) Hallucinations
3) Speech
4) Grossly disorganized or catatonic behaviour
5) Negative symptoms: affective flattening, logia, avolition etc.
Disorganized speech:
-individual switching from one topic to another (derailment or
loose associations)
-answers to questions may be obliquely related or completely unrelated
Catatonic behavior
(visible decreased reactivity to the environment) could be resistance to instructions, maintaining rigid, inappropriate or bizarre posture, complete lack of verbal and motor responses or the reverse excessive motor behaviour without obvious cause
Alogia
is manifested by diminished speech output
