What is nutritive sucking?

What is non-nutritive sucking?
Sucking for pleasure/calming
What are sucking pads?
Encapsulated mass of fat in the outer buccinator muscles- helps to support/strengthen the cheek during sucking
What is pacing?
Systematic stopping it nipple flow to impose breathing pauses- do not remove from mouth
What are some reasons for a feeding evaluation?
Sucking/swallowing incoordination, weak suck, concern of possible aspiration, severe irritability or behavioral problems during feeds, under nutrition
What are 3 signs of stress during feeding Evals?
Coughing, gagging, color change
When are oral feeds most recommended?
32 weeks
What is the most ideal sleep level for feeding?
Quiet-alert
What are some components involved in central alignment of older children?
Neutral head flex ion, elongated neck and trunk, shoulder girdle stable and depressed, hips at 90, pelvis stable and symmetrical in neutral position
Populations you will encounter in NICU?
Prematurity, GI problems, cleft lip/palate, cerebral palsy, muconium aspiration
What is CP?
Cerebral palsy is a development disability which encompasses many different disorders of movement and posture
What is CP caused by?
Brain injury either before during or a few years after birth
Symptoms noted in first few months of life for CP are?
Lack of alertness, irritability, jitteriness/trembling of limbs, Low muscle tone, poor feeding abilities
What is gestational age?
The number of weeks the baby has been in the uterus
