It’s the combination of bio-psycho-social factors that contributes to a person developing a disorder

- How are we taking care of the body we have?

Explain Somatic Symptom Disorder
- Often happens with women before the age of 30
- Has occurred for at least 6 months
- They seek help for:
1. Pain in 4 body sites
2. 2 G.I. symptoms
3. 1 sexual symptom (usually lost of interest in sex)
4. 1 brain issue (ex. headaches)
Explain secondary gain with examples
Some gets something out of having a disorder.
Ex. Attention, sympathy, or to avoid something
Explain Somatic Symptom Disorder with Pain
For at least 6 moths
- They have pain severe enough to seek medical help
- The pain prevents them from functioning
- Psychological factors play a role in the severity and expression of the pain
- They are not faking, they magnify the pain
Explain Illness Anxiety Disorder (Hypochodriasis)
For at least 6 months
- They believe they have a serious illness
- Disregard the M.D.’s opinion and test result
- Constantly seeks more medical opinions
- Focused on fear
- Focused on possible symptoms/ bodily focus
Explain Conversion Disorder. Give an example.
- Overwhelming psychological stress is converted into physical symptoms
- They lost some bodily function
- Not under voluntary control
- They don’t seem to care about their physical symptoms
- The symptoms often disappear when the stressor is gone
Ex. Solider losing his sight during a war
Explain Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Give an example
- They are very preoccupied with what they feel is a flaw in their body
- Constantly checking their body
- Avoid situations where they fear being judged or observed
- Often get plastic surgery
Ex. Micheal Jackson’s nose evolution
What are treatments for BDD?
Therapy
- Gradual exposure
- Develop new coping skills
- Explore the secondary gain
- Increase and use their social support
Explain Factitious Disorder Imposed on Self. Give an example
- They may manipulate tests or harm themselves to get medical attention
- Secondary gain: to be in a role of a patient
Ex. Putting blood in their urine test
Explain Malingering Disorder. Give an example.
- They will fake an illness or injury for a secondary gain, mostly for money or to get out of something, or drugs
- Once they receive their secondary gain, their symptoms go away
Ex. Car Insurance Fraud, faking illness when someone lightly rear them
