Quiz #2 Flashcards
List the order of draw by color
- Yellow
- Light Blue
- Red, Red Tiger, Orange, Gold
- Light Green, Green Tiger or Dark Green
- Lavender or Pink
- White or Pearl
- Grey
Which tube has a reversible anti-coagulant additive?
Light Blue or sodium citrate
Why is the order of draw important?
It prevents cross contaminating the additives in the tubes.
Erythrocytes
Red Blood Cells (RBCs). Hemoglobin (hgb) abundant in these cell membranes. No nucleus. Hemolyze easily. Lifespan of 100-120 days
Hemopoiesis
Production of RBCs
Leukocytes
White Blood Cells (WBCs). Indicates disease/infection. 5 types. Have a nucleus.
Thrombocytes
Platelets. Main function is clotting. 5-9 day lifespan
Reticulocyte
Immature RBC. Formed in bone marrow.
Plasma
Water like portion of the blood. Pale yellow in color. Contains fibrin. Obtained by spinning down any anticoagulant tube. Has a buffy coat.
Serum
Plasma that has the fibrin removed because of the clotting process. Obtained by spinning down any clot tube. No visible buffy coat so it has an irregular shaped clot.
Hemostasis
Ability to clot and close an open wound through vasoconstriction and platelet plug formation.
Hematoma
Leakage of blood out of the vessel into surrounding tissue
Neutrophil
1st responded to the beginning stages of inflammation. Uses phagocytosis and kills bacteria and fungi. Causes pus.
Eosinophil
Primarily attacks parasites and certain infections. Also helps with inflammation.
Basophil
Least common WBC. Carry histamine and release when activated causing symptoms of an allergic reaction. Increases inflammatory response.
