Quiz 2 Flashcards
Ophthalmology
Study of the eye and eye diseases
Optic nerve
Carries neural impulses from the eye to the brain
Blind spot
The point at which the optic nerve leaves the eye and no receptor cells are located there
Retina
The light sensitive inner surface of the eye containing the receptor rods and cones plus layers of neurons that begin the processing of visual information
Rods
Responsible for vision at low light levels
Cones
Active at higher light levels and capable of color vision
Cornea
The clear tissue that covers the front of the eyes
Lens
Focuses light onto retina
Pupil
The opening through which light enters the eye
Iris
A ring of muscle tissue that forms the colored portion of the eye around the pupil and controls the size of the pupil opening
Cilliary body
Contains a ring of muscles that surround the lens and controls its shape
Sclera
White of the eye
Fovea
The central focal point in the retina, around which the eye’s cones cluster
Macula lutes
Yellowish spot on the back of the retina; contains the fovea
Choroid
Middle, vascular layer of the eye, between the retina and the sclera
Vitreous humor
The transparent jellylike tissue filling the eyeball behind the lens
Lacrimal glands
Tear gland
Visual acuity
The ability to see fine detail
Accommodation
The process by which the eyes lens changes shape to focus near or far objects on the retina
Glaucoma
Increased intraocular pressure results in damage to the retina and optic nerve with loss of vision
Conjunctivitis
Pink eye
