Quiz Flashcards
How is splicing generally done?
Through the use of a splicing sleeve
What is the purpose of a junction box?
To house multiple terminal strips
What is the purpose of bonding?
Bonding is used to produce continuity between different parts of the aircraft, so there is a complete path for return electrons
What is splicing?
Attaching two conductors in a permanent way
What must be done to splices if they are done in a bundle?
They must be staggered
When is shielding used?
In areas where lines of flux cause disturbance with a particular component.
What are three forms of circuit protectors?
Fuses, circuit breakers, current limiters.
What is the purpose of circuit protection?
To protect the wiring, not the component.
What causes a fuse to blow or a circuit breaker to trip?
Current
What type must aircraft circuit breakers be?
Trip free type
What is derating a switch?
Operating a device at less than it’s rated maximum power in order to prolong its life
What type of circuit is a battery circuit?
Pre bus
What type of system is a generator circuit?
A pre bus system
What is the primary source of aircraft electrical power aside from the ignition system?
The generator circuit
How many terminals does a generator have?
Two or three
What is a type A connection?
A connection where the voltage regulator is connected between the field and the ground
What is a type B connection?
A connection where the voltage regulator is connected between the field and the armature
Why do A&Ps need to be aware of the two different kinds of connections?
Proper use and wiring of voltage regulator
Proper method of flashing the field
What type of system is the alternator circuit?
A pre bus system
What type of circuit is the landing gear circuit?
A post bus circuit
What type of circuit is a starter circuit?
Both a pre bus and a post bus
What are navigational lights required by?
14 CFR 91.205
Must all three navigational lights be on one circuit?
Yes
Are instrument lights required?
No
What does a red indication light mean?
Immediate hazard, required immediate corrective action
What does an amber indication light mean?
Unsafe condition, needs corrective measures soon.
What does a green indication light mean?
Safe operation
What is the purpose of load analysis?
To ensure that the battery is always being charged and that the wiring is not overloaded.
Describe the process of load analysis.
Performing a load analysis consists of comparing the load of a system to the alternator/generator output capabilities, and the wiring and circuit protection capabilities.
Describe the steps of inspecting electrical things
Consult manufacturers service manual
Determine method of load monitoring is acceptable
Do a complete operational check
Check all components for security
Check terminals for security, corrosion and continuity
Check wiring for wear and proper routing, support clamping
Check fuses and circuit breakers for proper size
If necessary do a load analysis
What is usually done when servicing components such as switches, relays, lights, terminals and terminal strips?
Remove and replace!
What is an ohmmeter used for?
Checking resistance in a circuit, in a component, or continuity.
What is a voltmeter used for?
Determining the voltage of a circuit, voltage dropper across a component, or voltage difference between two portions of a circuit
What is an ammeter used for?
Measuring the current in a circuit
What are the most common problems with circuits?
Open circuits
Short circuits
Low system voltage
Describe the troubleshooting process for electrical
Gather all symptom info from customer
Confirm problem exists as described
Study understand proper operation of the system
(Make a simple sketch of only the electrical circuit, or portion of the electrical circuit you are dealing with)
Make a list of all probable causes
Work through list from simplest/cheapest to most complex/expensive
What are voltmeters usually used for?
Troubleshooting opens
What are ohmmeters usually used to troubleshoot?
Shorts!
